Materials:
- 2 Metal Rings (8 mm)
- Yarn (Lace (0) weight)
- Cotton Cord
- U.S. size 7 (1.65 mm) Crochet Hook
Instructions:
Over a metal ring or single cord foundation Sc 17. Sl St ends together to form a starting ring.
- Sc 1 into each St surrounding the ring (Sc 17 in total). Sl St the ends together.
- Make three leaf segments:
- *Ch 3. Sc 1 into the next St.* Repeat 2x (3 loops in total)
- Turn work.
- *Ch 5. Sc 1 into the next loop Sp.* Repeat until you reach the end of the row (3 loops in total)
- Turn work.
- *Ch 5. Sc 1 into the next loop Sp.* Repeat until you reach the end of the row (3 loops in total)
- Turn work.
- *Ch 5. Sc 1 into the next loop Sp.* Repeat until you reach the end of the row (3 loops in total)
- Sl St down the side of the leaf, until the you are once again at the base ring.
- Sc 1 into the next St in the base ring.
- Continue on to the crochet the next two leaf segments. (3 in total)
- Use Sc to add a single cord around each leaf segment.
- Add a stem to the base of the leaf:
- Over a single cord: Sc 12.
- Ch 1 to turn.
- Over the cord: Sc 12 back up to the base of the leaf, hooking into both horizontal loops of each St.
- Sc 17 around the 2nd metal ring. Sl St the ends together to finish the Rnd.
- Attach the ring to the top of the 1st ring to give it more height.

I’ve never heard of using a metal ring in an Irish crochet appliqué, good idea! Your leaf is lovely!

Thank you! and the metal ring does break with tradition, but I have found that it is a lot easier to work with and gives the form a stronger base structure.
