One of the first thing to surface in my garden each Spring are the daffodils. That honor used to be held by the crocus, but I finally conceded that war to the chipmunks. Each Fall I plant one or two new variety of daffodil bulbs, and each Spring I anxiously wait for them to surface.
FYI daffodil is the common name for the genus narcissus.
One of the best things about daffodils, beside the fact that they are a cheery sign of Spring, is that the garden rodent population don’t find them appetizing. In fact, the bulbs are toxic to them. It does not stop them from digging them up to investigate, but it keeps them from getting completely consumed.
