Irish Crochet: Fan

Materials:

  • Yarn (Lace (0) weight)
  • Cotton Cord
  • U.S. size 7 (1.65 mm) (Eng. size 4) Crochet Hook
  • Metal Ring (8 mm)

Instructions:

Over the metal ring Sc 20.  Sl St ends together to form ring.

  1. *Ch 5. Sc 1 in St below.* Repeat 6x. (7 loops in total).
  2. Turn. *Ch 5. Sc 1 in the loop Sp.* Repeat 6x. (7 loops in total).
  3. Ch 1 to turn. Crochet over a single cord: * Sc 3 over cord. Sc 1 in the loop Sp.* Repeat 6x. (7 loops in total).
  4. Ch 1 to turn.  Sc 20.
  5. Ch 5 to turn.  Sc 1 in 2nd Sp. *Ch 5. Sc 1 after skipping 1 St from the previous row.* Repeat 8x. (10 loops in total when counting the initial turn)
  6. Ch 5 to turn.  Sc 1 in the 1st loop.  *Ch 5. Sc 1 in the next loop.* Repeat 8x. (10 loops in total when counting the initial turn)
  7. Ch 1 to turn.  Crochet over a single cord: * Sc 3 over cord. Sc 1 in the loop Sp from the Rnd below.* Repeat 9x. (10 loops in total).
  8. Ch 1 to turn. Turn the cord into the next row.  Crochet over cord: Sc 30.
  9. Ch 5 to turn.  Sc 1 in 2nd Sp. *Ch 5. Sc 1 after skipping 1 St from the previous row.* Repeat 13x. (15 loops in total when counting the initial turn)
  10. Ch 5 to turn.  Sc 1 in the 1st loop.  *Ch 5. Sc 1 in the next loop.* Repeat 13x. (15 loops in total when counting the initial turn)
  11. Repeat Row 10. Fastened off the yarn ends.

Crochet over a single cord – outlining the fan.

  1. Begin at the metal ring base and at the end of the 1st Row. Sc 1 into the first empty St. Sc 7 over a single cord foundation. Sc 1 in the 3rd St Sp (Sk 2).  Sc 7 over a single cord foundation.  Sc 1 in the 4th St Sp (Sk 3). Sc 7 over a single cord foundation. Sc 1 in the 3rd St Sp (Sk 2) rounding the base and aligning with the 1st Row.
  2. Crochet up along one side of the fan – covering the cord and unifying the loop edges.
  3. Across the top of the fan: Sc 7 over the cord foundation to form the scallop and  Sc 1 in every other loop Sp to connect each scallop to the fan.  8 scallops in total.
  4. Crochet down along the last side of the fan – covering the cord and unifying the loop edges.
  5. Connect the cord into the backside of the starting ring – the entire fan should be outlined.
